Why We Love Lemons!
Learn About Our Ingredients
Citrus limon, also known as “lemon,” is a tree with evergreen leaves and yellow edible fruit, originally native to Asia. Lemons were cultivated in Europe beginning in the 15th century and were later introduced to the Americas in 1493 when Christopher Columbus brought lemon seeds on his voyages.
In 1747 James Lind experimented with lemons to treat seaman suffering with scurvy, long before Vitamin C was ever discovered. This common use of lemon juice, known since ancient times, is now supported by numerous scientific studies.
Other uses for lemon juice from traditional medicine include warding off infections, treating sore throats, fevers, rheumatism, high blood pressure and chest pain, and in Romania, the essential oil of lemons is used to suppress coughs.
We use lemon juice in our elderberry syrup, both as a preservative and for its impressive medicinal properties. But is there real scientific data to back up all these traditional medicinal uses?
Numerous scientific studies have focused on the antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hepato-regenerating and cardioprotective activities of this amazing little fruit.
Turns out, the therapeutic potential of the humble lemon is determined by its rich chemical composition. The most important group of compounds in lemons are flavonoids, phenolic and fatty acids. Additionally, the macronutrients in lemons include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium.
Research has confirmed the biological activity of C. limon fruit extracts to be beneficial in inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells and tumor growth, augmenting antioxidant cellular defenses, inhibiting inflammatory activity, and inhibiting the growth of multiple strains of bacteria, some strains of Candida, and the herpes simplex virus.
And if that wasn’t enough, studies have also confirmed hepato-regenerative activity, efficacy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its symptoms, anti-obesity activity, positive effects on the cardiovascular system, strengthening of short-term memory, increase in bone density of the skeletal system, and treatment for chronic pneumonic.
But what does all of this mean in plain English?
It means that scientific research, as is so often the case, has proven that traditional medicine knew what it was doing! Lemons are a veritable powerhouse with multiple therapeutic uses.
And that’s why we put lemon juice in our Elderberry Syrup. Like everything else we do here on the farm, we want to empower natural health for you and your family, by making high quality, traditional herbal remedies – from our family for your family.
